CULTURAL CRISIS...December 13, 2021

Consider first reading the attached brief statement of C.G. Jung on the meaning of  'enantiodromia.'

I hesitate to express publicly what to many would sound like 'crazy' thoughts. But are imo very relevant for our critical social times. Unusual times call up what may seem to be unusual resources. Mine is one concerned person's view of the present dangers our culture faces. I realize each item I present calls for more discussion and thought by persons far brighter than I. But I share what I have the best I can. These are imo very extreme times with demanding problems like cultures have not faced for many centuries.

I think we are seeing what Jung describes happening in our American culture in our  extreme yet evolutionarily necessary times. A large percent of the collective mind, probably at least thirty percent, has given up trying to be rational regarding what they take to heart is social and political 'truth.' They understandably have lost confidence in the status quo of one or more of our institutions: political, government, science, education and religion. And in discouragement have given way to some dangerous, seductive and enticing irrational beliefs.

Please hear me out. The answer is not to think we need to be more fiercely rational, to somehow destroy our essentially  natural human irrationality. As tempting an approach as that is it's neither possible or desirable.

None of us escapes the possibility of being led into some irrational, meaning non-sensical and illogical, view of what is 'true'. This after all is perfectly and dangerously consistent with our ever present and partly irrational human nature. We deny this fact to our own peril in these present times, ie that we are each and all partly irrational (without reasoned material support) in some of our strongest most emotional assumptions and beliefs. We can without realization, ie unconsciously, drift too far toward the abyss of irrationality and cult-like unfounded authoritarian-based trust.

This dynamic imo is the best explanation of the tragedy of ordinary well educated people in Nazi Germany in early 1940's. They plunged into an irrational mindset and belived lies with which  they were inundated. No one in times like this, no matter how clear thinking we believe we are, is exempt from our minds being pulled in by such an irrational and unconscious( truly not knowing) vortex.

As Jung says here the only prevention to falling into accepting the irrational as total truth regarding some matter is to first honestly accept that a limited, or balanced, amount of irrational belief is necessary for human spiritual/psychological personal and cultural health. This strong need for the irrational denied in our materialistic culture has led us to a very precarious imbalance in this newly forming epoch and can spell disaster if not detected, made conscious, to our rational processes.

Until recent times our religions, and to some extent the arts and literature, have been a successful outlet for our need of the irrational. (Believing that there is an all knowing/ all powerful God who sits outside of us in a heaven and occasionally intervenes in human life is an example an irrational idea our Western culture has generally believed for many centuries.) And our rational side rightfully led many of us in the recent century to doubt such irrational assumptions however important they once were for needed balance. Many have not lost belief in the Sacred but have necessarily and honestly rejected this traditional now inappropriate and failing 'image of God.' Times are now seeking to birth a truer more alive 'image or symbol of God' than the once effective fading one.

These changes of recent centuries then over time circled us back to the opposite of the irrational; ie believing we can rely on rational reasoning alone for discerning all important 'truth' and values. And that our physical rational senses are the 'only' avenue of real and needed truth or information.

Unfortunately we can't as humans defer to that simplistic notion of our actual complicated inner nature. For our psyche/soul aspect cannot healthily live extendedly in such a stressed imbalance of rational vs irrational, of consciousness vs unconsciousness. We are both of these and they ever naturally seek an effective balance within us however painful the process becomes in life.

So this historic development left our 'modern' culture with a strong imbalance in our rational vs irrational nature. We have become over the centuries too extreme in the certainty of our rationality and reasoning, of our amazing intellect and its exploding technology and information. But our lack of openly acknowledging and considering the reality of the irrational has opened the floodgates for much of our culture to have a monstrous need (and excuse) to dangerously believe and totally trust certain irrational beliefs without question. This is especially so regarding social, political, ethical and religious matters. Note these are strongly held emotional areas of the human psyche which more easily succumb to our irrational nature. I suspect the more a person claims to be totally rational about such things the more likely they are to be believing destructive untruths.

Forgetting political angles for a moment, two outstanding dangerous examples of irrationality taking root are that receiving vaccines as medically prescribed to combat a real virus pandemic is a wrong, weak, unhealthy or unethical thing to do. Another is that the thoroughly investigated presidential election of 2020 was' rigged and stolen ' from one candidate and given wrongly to another. Such needed illusory beliefs originate from deeper levels of our psyche than only surface politics but they can certainly be emotionally manipulated by unethical authority figures.

Then a question becomes what dynamics must happen to bring order and some protection from this collective threat of our culture splitting and collapsing due to overly irrational beliefs and fears? When a fall into irrationality, as we now see, happens to a large part of the culture there is then serious danger of a full collapse into destructive irredeemable chaos. This would be a kind of new dark age where we lose the intellectual, cultural and psychological gains made over many centuries.( We are no more protected from such an end than ancient cultures were.)

So what is needed for our redemption? First, the collective irrational beliefs must be rationally recognized and resisted by as many persons as possible without giving in to violence. And secondly it also raises the essential and urgent need for some kind of outer/inner event which clearly embraces both the rational and irrational nature of our human minds/souls in some new unexpected way. Such a phenomenon can shake us and bring us toward a newly balanced more healthy culture.

But the sticky thing is we humans can't will or orchestrate by science/medicine/military/academics or politics, such a psychological/spiritual phenomenon. Our advanced technology has no such capacity nor does our best and strongest rational reasoning or institutional religions. Yes, you may guess, it is from the imaginative irrational realm where such phenomena have in ancient times risen to redeem such occasions as ours now and also much of the world. Such a happening can result in a culture rising to new levels of collective consciousness.

One example of this spiritual/psychological dynamic in history was the surprising symbolic phenomenon of the 'birth of God as a human' emerging among lowly people in the near East some two thousand years ago. Times are right it seems for as powerful but likely different symbol, effective for these new times, to emerge from the irrational realm of our collective psyche.

The need seems to me this strong and urgent now. So then we seem called by fate to now keep our personal rational aspect strong and active while also acknowledging we must better trust and anticipate that irrational factors beyond our rational grasp must be autonomously activated and the results witnessed and absorbed. Such cooperating rational and irrational factors could pull us back safely from the abyss that threatens now to swallow us all.

May we be very alert and may that which is God be merciful.

SO CALLED 'MODERATION' CAN BE AVOIDING RESPONSIBLITY...October 2, 2021

I hear in pastor Jim Rigby's statement below an important clarification about a common wrong application of the word 'moderate'. A meaning which seeks to escape personal responsibility. I suspect one can't be responsibly 'moderate' about most matters of 'truth and justice."

It's no accident that a 3rd branch of our democratic government is overseen by 'judges'...to attempt to discover what is 'true and just', nothing else. Truth and justice social issues call each human involved to a 'yes or no' answer, not to a perceived evasive moderation. For a democratic government to survive there has to be a good majority of citizens who see that we have no ethical alternative but to always desire the courage to say a clear 'yes or no' to each matter of 'truth and justice' that faces our nation.

I think only by some self deception can any person justify being 'moderate ' in such matters. This does not mean we have the power to always make public matters 'true and just' but we can always throw our weight and voice to give our clear 'yes or no' to them and to search for them. And to not claim 'moderation' about such core issues of public fairness. Personally I can't imagine an alternative path toward an American 'more perfect union.'

Seeking 'truth and justice' is I think always something that is happening or not at our inner level and can't be accurately judged always by outward behavior. I'm rather confident that Jesus, in the gospels, is continuously shown as trying to focus attention on our inner world where truth and justice seek to be acknowledged with a 'yes or no'. The gospel author has Jesus say, "Let your yes be yes and your no be no." It's speaking of a realm where moderation is no honest choice. It's an invitation to explore our heart more than our vote. And the two are probably consistent.

A truth is there is a large number of Americans who do not want everyone to have equal rights under the law. Though fundamental to democracy these are afraid that would diminish themselves too much in  some unstated way. The evidence is these are not a majority. But they are ones who will choose to say 'no' to our pressing issues of 'justice and truth.'  Sooner or later, our nation becomes what the inner hearts of it's people are..

I think there is a wide swath of Americans including many in leadership who do not do the inner work of ethical discernment. This means to discover inwardly what is 'truthful and just' in life and to then act on that with honesty as best one can. Lincoln and others standout historically as ones who wrestled in their souls( This process is a spiritual as well as an intellectual matter.). For people desiring a democratic type government to pass off the hard and sincere task of inner ethical 'yes or no' decisions by saying they are being 'moderate' is no way to expect a democracy to hold together.

RELATING TO OUR PORTION OF SUFFERING...July 17, 2021

But our inclination, due to our inherited cultural attitudes, encourages us to try to ignore, make light of, outdo and deny our actual portion of real human suffering. This is not healthy or healing. Suffering comes in many ways: physical/material/relationship losses, health decline, family stresses, poverty or threat of it ....to name a few. It can be felt in body and mind as physical, emotional and/or psychological pain.

To deny our own suffering is to deny caring for ourself. It separates us from our self. It's a failing effort to escape our personal humanity.

It must be no accident that the gospel  refers to Jesus not only as one "following his discovered joy' but at the same time a 'person of many sorrows'. These opposing realities must paradoxically go together and mark us, perhaps more than anything else, as a maturing human adult; not pretending life to be what it is not or denying our own incarnate real personal  experience.

Often denying our personal suffering runs along with denying the suffering of others and of the world. So denying the reality that we do personally suffer as human beings is not a winning attitude toward this mystery of human life and our individually unique suffering consciousness.

THE USA HAS SUFFERED A STAGGERING MASS DECEPTION.. July 16, 2021

In most common language what the quote below describes is really this awful and simple.

A significant part of our nation has got caught up in a mass psychological deception.( I'm of the uncertain opinion that Trump actually believes  his own deception, that he won the election. That is not hard to psychologically explain given his demonstrated extreme truth
-avoiding temperament. But we should avoid the temptation to think Trump or any individual can cause such a phenomenon. It is much more deeply anchored than that.)

Before any of us say this means others are crazy while we are sain, we should know such a fully believed deception, given just the right balance of inner needs and fears and outer enticements, can happen to ANY of us. Because such invasions into our overly trusted conscious minds have their origins in the deep more powerful, creative and destructive, levels of our common Collective Unconscious. It is from this deep, real yet unconscious to us all, level that our more delicate human ego consciousness (which we generally feel  can keep us safely anchored in reality) has only recently evolved. A diverse nation finding intellectual/emotional balance has at times very narrow dangerous passages.

NO ONE is so strong of mind that she is above being deceived by such a dark collective psychological storm. It has surely happened numerous times before to otherwise smart persons such as in advanced Germany only eighty years ago. Then six million persons were murdered at the consent of  a majority of 'respected' citizens.

CG Jung, founder of analytical psychology, in Switzerland  took great pains in the first half of the 1900's to learn and to explain how mass deception happens in world history.  He also indicated  it was likely to happen in the amazing and youthful America. And he understood no one can know, including himself,  just how destructive such a phenomenon  once begun will turn out to be in the world.

But, for whatever reasons, those who are not swept up this time by it must do their all to not deny what is happening, to resist its growth and call it what it is, a mass public deception involving  complicated psychological/political/religious factors combining.  And it can undo any nation if enough clearer eyed  persons are not present and in fact do strongly, calmly and openly resist it.

CAN WE RESPONSIBLY AVOID POLITICS?..JUNE 13, 2021

There are individuals in high leadership positions in our government who have healthy respectful views of the many natural differences among us human citizens.

And there are also many in high positions who see 'other than their circle or kind' as negatively different. These high-end persons are NOT devoted personally to protecting by law the equal rights of all of us. This includes not standing up for persons of all colors, ethnicities, religions, sexual/gender identifications and any 'other' minority demographic.

If we don't think it matters what kind of persons we vote for in this regard then aren't we essentially saying to all minorities, ' To hell with you. You just don't really matter as much as I and my kind do." ? Isn't that the opposite of what America, and for that matter the Christ story, professes to be about?

Don't we deceive ourself to claim to love, value and respect all citizens and still decline to make focused, deliberate, thoughtful political choices for the 'healthy' kind of candidates wherever they come from or what party they may be?

And don't we deceive ourself to not realize times in our history, like now, when generally a whole party, with its one-man leadership, openly doesn't seek 'healthy' open-minded candidates? Ones interested in the rights and protections of all U.S. citizens?

Can we vote for such persons and still claim to care about securing equality for all, a national 'democratic' atmosphere. I'm not personally seeing how.

FINDING ONE'S MORE COMPLETE SELF..June 1, 2021

It is seeming to me that for most to find and follow ones true self one must make mental contact with and be influenced by some, at least one, of the greatest human genius creative minds.

Instead we tend to listen and follow some watered down worn out values and principles and cliches of our collective cultures , groups and institutions. Or easily fall into some form of the obsessive materialism of our times.

I know little of Tolstoy except that he is one of those gifted genius minds, one of those who is actually a spiritual gift to all of humanity. Jim Rigsby happened onto him it appears.

These creative genius minds turn out, often in spite of themselves, to also be the greatest lovers, lovers of all humankind. So they all are teaching the same thing, that the greatest of all things is indeed love. If we can only discover what that means to us and spend a significant part of life doing do it. Then we might more fully, and perhaps more consciously, become what we are intended to be.

'Abortion' A WORD THAT HAS BLINDED AMERICA ..May 30, 2021

Wonder why this is the case? I fell under this delusion about the nature of abortion in 1968. Little did I know that all of 'evangelical' Christisnity was about to make it as it's new marching orders and a new political ideology. Most Republicans, acknowledging it or not, have become for all practical purposes one issue voters. If a politician, no matter his character and competence, claims to be anti-choice he gets the vote.

The misguiding and tragically destructive spell the word abortion casts was fully lifted from me by 1980 while I was still a preacher in an evangelical church. I'm grateful for that and wish it for so many others.

Imo our nation would be so much healthier emotionally, spiritually and politically if there were not this single emotionally based sentimental obsession, which blinds people to the issues we need to nationally face now. This was also the beginning of many ordinary folks turning to an anti-science attitude regarding many crucial issues facing us.

If this word abortion were not such an immediate obsession with so many I don't think there would have ever been a Trumpism. Yet it's important to understand the nation had been groomed for a Trump type leader for many decades by an anti womens' choice attitude. And I suspect he would be quick to allow his own family women to choose abortion.

This political hostility toward women and opposing the human right for her own timing to have children I'm confident will not stand against the slow but strong evutionary trajectory for the full equality of women. Such a backward societal leaning will not imo survive against modern scientific/psychological kowledge or the emerged urgent need of America to discover a new redeeming spiritual/religious attitude in our land.

CAN ONE MOMENT OF JUSTICE BRING MANY MORE..OR NOT? April 20, 2021

This can be a genuine turning point in America living up to its highest ideals and its potential greatness. For it to stick though citizens must hold ourselves and our officials accountable to follow through with its meaning.

This great historic reminder that "justice and equality' of all persons need not just be a pious phrase but an ever growing reality in this nation. That we can more clearly see the astonishing value and beauty in each human life. And can agree more and more that ALL persons deserve the same protections and supports from our laws and officials.

VOTING SHOULD BE EQUALLY CONVENIENT FOR ALL... March 7, 2021

It seems like white America continually forgets from one generation to the next how horribly we and our laws have treated our black  brothers and sisters.

We may be nearing our last chance in Congress to make the votes of black persons just as strong and alive in shaping our country's culture as white votes are.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/03/07/time-some-more-good-trouble-voting-rights-56-years-after-bloody-sunday/?fbclid=IwAR3olg_t6ZCptKCUAbw7sP8YsyiJTtM5relj9X0rbAvHb8ijIgoXqyqaEaw

White persons must rise above the fearful and backward need to make Americ a white  culture rather than truly the mixed skin color culture that its evolutionary and divine destiny is. We need to determine to have America's laws truly, freely and fairly support a nation whose culture is a natural product of ALL its people.

We still don't know what that would look like but we could trust it will be more beautiful, strong and inspiring than our white dominated one forced by political suppression of the votes of dark skinned citizens. Oh happy  glorious day to come, a more genuine United States of America.

TOO MANY AMERICANS SEE VIOLENCE AND LIES AS SOCIALLY NECESSARY...January 12, 2021

How can anyone doubt the clear mentality of our white history while so many poorer Blacks have been trying in vain to live in simple real human equality. Our white history is that we have  feared that black persons' increased votes will 'steal' our culture from us.?

https://www.npr.org/2021/02/11/966498544/a-scary-survey-finding-4-in-10-republicans-say-political-violence-may-be-necessa?utm_campaign=storyshare&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&fbclid=IwAR39tLyOok21xzKQAi_0BKf4tTeLYID8U7g6tbrukPxAYI0iCJmyaj5J6O4

Why can't we finally just own it and stop that immoral and silly 'fight.'? Our white history has been a fight to keep a majority white culture and its privilege alive and dominant, even if we've had to approve lies. That is what the violent attack on the Capitol at bottom was about.

I'm referring to the white unowned, and often barely conscious, gripping  fear that America is headed to become primarily a dark skinned nation where white skin will have no more favoritism than other skin colors. And that we will be finally a grand developed democracy in the world. And ironically that is an accurate and hopeful image of the best new developing America. But the fear of it is a backward looking  tragic delusion. This image instead should be what we are prayerfully looking to and longing for.

It is quite obvious, from this perspective, that an effort to maintain a white skinned privileged culture has been relentless from our start. And it directly opposes both scientific/social evolution and any sober estimate of a Sacred Will for our nation---our two most reliable sources of social truth and human dignity.

It's time to 'Stop the Steal' of human dignity and mutuality. And time to insist on one equal race. It's way past time to stop these tragic hide and seek games which successfully divide us and foolishly seek to stop our highest and truest national destiny.

The Capitol assault on Jan 6, 2021, as this post also indicates, makes clear that many (including many in Congress) will now openly support deadly violence to prevent our democracy from outgrowing its undermining determined  'favored white skin' mentality.

After many conversations this rational is my best and most accurate understanding of America's ongoing, and now definitely most dangerous, internal problems.

Most responses I get are some form of, 'We've managed this problem for 300 years. It's not as serious as you think it is Jim'. I've come to suspect it is more serious than most anyone knows or imagines. And it is nearly entirely a White People's problem to solve. We hold the real answers in our own history and heart.

AN ASTONISHING NATION FACES ITS ORIGINAL DARKNESS..January 6, 2021

As a culture we remain significantly unconscious of our original national sin of racism. Our refined rational mind just can't fully face it. We actually know, at various levels of consciousness, how real and egregious such believed ethnic superiority is and the divisions it demands.

Unfortunately removing the segregation of public facilities in the mid sixties only worked on the symotoms, not the racist heart problem of our white majority. It remains as strong as ever as the unspoken fear that 'people of color are going to take stuff of mine and give it to undeserving others making me poorer, holding me and my family back.' That essentially is now the heart problem and big national lie. In this way it's no more complicated than an older sibling being jealous and fearful of a new child in the family.

It is deeply psychological and continues to eat at America's heart. It's in the faces of those who stormed our capitol just minutes before  Congress was to approve the election of a non racist president. It was done in the hope of intimidating Congress from doing it's sworn job thus allowing Trump to stay in unlawful power. It was only a dream-wish. We can be very thankful Congress did not cower in fear that night but came right back and certified the legal President..

But our central problem remains maybe stronger than ever.  It is nearly in the full open which is a spiritual/psychological improvement for it is more honest. None of us can for long hide from behind our white status much longer. Citizen Donald Trump has simply become a living symbol of keeping white supremacy alive in America.

I suspect this 'uprising'  in following the Trumpian symbol is another last gasping effort to cling to white superiority by a third of us. This in a nation destined for something far more admirable and glorious. This is my living hope. I know of no overt racist organization that does not strongly support Mr Trump and for the open cause of white supremacy. He has purposely and consistently emboldened them culminating in the seige on our Capitol January 6, 2021.

At varying levels of consciousness I suspect all white adults know our real heart truth. And it will have to be faced for its ugliness, maybe sooner than later, by us all. We will finally 'see' our own collective shadow clearly. God help us each to find our own truth and courage. And may we not foolishly spill blood and waste treasure due to a lack of consciousness of our own long-time truth.

TRUST IN WHAT IS FAR LARGER...January 12, 2021

As unpopular and misunderstood as the word 'religion' is in our USA culture it is the large world religions which have in all historic time given cohesive, however imperfct and eventually after a few thousand years becoming irrelevant, form to human affairs.

So should a 'new religion' spontanelusly yet in continuity with the past arise out of our present chaos it would bring into our world a new,  not yet imagined, cultural perspective with new norms for the cooperative affairs of humankind. That is the potential power of the religious instinct that is a part of our collective human make up. That is why it is dangerous, and perhaps absurd, to succumb to the idea of 'getting rid of religion', as if we could.

So it may be that 'religion', in this psychological/spiritual sense, is the only possible way for a truly relevant and compassionate 'new and better' world order to come into existence.

This way, when it happens, it would be commonly and humbly known, 'this has come from God '- not primarily from our personal or collective ego strength, ingenuity and brain power. (As important as  these are.)

Presently most Americans are of either the practical secular view that our best mortal intelligence can find a way to a new evolutionary world epoch or the many very conservative religious folks who think their God will force itself on the whole world.

Neither of these attitudes trust in the power of the more authentic timeless religious one of doing what one can, loving as best one knows how, while full heartedly trusting that something in us all is at play which is far larger than our mortal ego efforts.

THE POWER OF LIVING SYMBOL FOR GOOD OR BAD...January 3, 2021

A Reflection: To be deeply and irreversibly moved by a living symbol(compared to an object which has become only a  socially approved 'sign'  to say be worn as jewelry) is to become 'religious' minded in the richest meaning of the word. This change can begin from either inner or outer experience and it becomes both.

This is how the human psyche is moved to a higher consciousness. And if such transforming is not balanced by the grace of genuine compassion it risks  becoming horribly heartless and ruthless.

Living symbols, which arrive spontaneously in the human collective mind as needed, have the power to alter the human point of view and values, even against the human conscious will.  They can stimulate the highest or lowest human  motivations and behaviors.

Human consciousness of these spiritual/deeply psychological dynamics is what makes the difference in the living symbol being the catalyst for good or evil.  On the dangerous side they can definitely create a collective movement that has the same one-mindedness as a religious cult. Only increased human consciousness, psychological awareness of what is happening,  can provide what's needed for persons to 'see' the difference.
